Starting in our next update we’re removing the option to create an account for Heard via Facebook. If you’re logged in with Facebook nothing will change for now – this only affects new accounts. Moving forward we’ll be migrating our accounts to email or sms verification. If you’ve used Facebook to create your Heard account you’ll receive a notification on how to do that.
When we created Heard we wanted to make it as easy as possible for people to create an account and login, and logging in with your facebook account seemed a great way to achieve this, but reviewing this it’s become apparent that it’s creating a disparity for some of our users.
We’re not bashing Facebook – we use use it here every day both professionally and personally, but they use their user data differently than we do. We don’t track our users or give other people access to your data, and we store very little information about you or your habits. Facebook by default tracks more than we do, which means that someone who signs up to Heard using their email address has more privacy than someone who signs up via Facebook, and we don’t think that’s fair.
Moving forward we’ll be migrating all facebook created accounts to email or sms verification. We’ll make sure we make this as painless as possible for you, and we’ll send you instructions on the best way to do this.
The easiest way to to request a password reset, and enter the email you used to sign up to Facebook with. your account will then be linked to that email address and you’ll be logged in with only that email address from then on. There will be support available for anyone who has trouble migrating across.
Coming later this year we’ll be adding verification by sms for new users to give more options for signing up whilst retaining the privacy we promote our users.
